I was instructed early on not to put a picture of myself on the cover of my books. My good friend was correct when he gave me that instruction, because it was based on promotion and marketing. But, this last election has shown on the surface a lot has not changed. Underneath, there is still the problem of race, ethnicity, misogyny and class. So, I started writing on the premise that my books would be just a snapshot of my experiences and lessons learned. But, Morehouse College taught me well and I could see the trends and the direction the country was going. I am not a genius, I have never been in denial of what I see, hear and observed. There are many anecdotes that can be used, but at the end of the day the best I can say is no one is promised tomorrow.
